Interview | Shayla Burgess on making her Bees debut
We interview Shayla Burgess as well as Head of Goalkeeping Craig McCreeth to talk about her debut and the current goalkeeping situation at the Bees.
Development Goalkeeper Shayla Burgess made her first team debut on Saturday against Brighton and Hove Albion Ladies. A quick turnaround of events left Shayla excited at the prospect of wearing the number one shirt. However, her place in the squad was only confirmed on Saturday leaving her little time to prepare.
Shayla’s first team debut against a strong Brighton side was one only upcoming goalkeepers could have dreamt of. Her solid performance and last minute saves secured the Bees a 1-1 draw.
“I was really pleased, I made some good saves, especially in the 92nd minute. There’s lots I have to work on, but overall I was really happy with it”.
Goalkeeping coach Craig McCreeth spoke of his delight for Shayla:
“She’s worked really hard and has a fantastic attitude. The opportunity has been thoroughly deserved and she has taken it with both hands and done really well”
Craig provided us with a Goalkeeping update and spoke of recent signing Amelia Houghton-Boyle from Arsenal who will play in the Bees Development squad. Shayla will be taking on a more permanent role in the first team, challenging current Goalkeeper Sophie Harris for a spot in the starting eleven.
